1965 Pedigree Dolls and Toys Limited. Sindy is a registered trademark of Pedigree Dolls And Toys Limited.
In 1965 Sindy met Paul at a dance and ......'was immediatley attracted to his pleasant, slightly shy personality. She noticed what a well dressed young man he was (and you know how important clothes are to her !) Paul is slightly taller than Sindy and he's as up to date as next year's motor show. His arms and bendy legs move freely....'The style book went on....' Who's the luckiest girl in town ? Sindy ! Because she now has a super boyfriend, Paul. He's got a smart collection of clothes-the type of wardrobe every girl would like her boyfriend to wear, all tailor-made with handsome detail.
Paul is keen on music and dancing and he and Sindy go to jazz clubs and dances. Like Sindy, he likes a good time and his clothes are designed for a free-wheeling life.
Paul in Casuals
There were three models of Paul issued in his lifetime, the first was Made In England, and came wearing a red cotton jersey turtle neck sweater with ribbed collar, cuffs and hem. His blue jeans were 'slim-cut' 14-inch bottoms'...and he wore white sneakers on his feet. The outfit was for '..weekends and casual parties'...and complimented Sindy's weekenders outfit. Paul could also be bought wearing a green version of the sweater.
Paul had moulded hair and bendable elbows and knees, wire was threaded though his limbs to enable this, although a lot of Pauls now don't bend anymore as the wire has broken with so much play.
The second Paul was a 'miniature' version of the first Paul, made in Hong Kong', like the Miniature Patch, and Sindy, he's not the easiest doll to dress well in the full size Paul clothes.
The last Paul issued had 'real' hair, in a trendy 'Beatles' style. Paul of course, being named after Paul McCartney, lead singer with the biggest group at the time.
Far left and right ( next to original moulded hair Paul)..Made in Hong Kong, rooted hair Paul, with his trendy 'Beatle' haircut, wearing casuals. Introduced in 1967, he did little to hold the Sindy fans interest and was sadly discontinued the same year. Although he still appeared in Sindy's annuals and comic strip in 'June and Schoolfriend' for several years after his departure from The Sindy set.
Paul's Made in Hong Kong jeans on the left, a darker denim and the popper is domed. The Made in England jeans are lighter denim and have a dead flat popper, all made in England Sindy and Paul outfits have this type of popper, either coloured, black, white, 'silver' or brass.
Two variations of Paul's sneakers, I believe the left hand pair are Made In England and much 'rarer' than the ones on the right.
1965, Paul's first outfits
Seaside
This was the first outfit to be shown in the style book. The perfect compliment to Sindy's 'Seaside Sweetheart' outfit. Made in washed out red denim, it consisted of a smart 'continental-type' slash necked top and matching shorts. Paul wore brown one strap sandals, ultra fashionable half frame sun glasses and carried a red terry beach towel, mauve water ski's and a camera for holiday snaps. Straight away paul was given a great play value outfit.
Motorway Man
Who remembers dad putting on his 'car coat' before taking a cold winters day journey in his pride and joy ? Back in the 60s any driver worth his salt wore a trendy, yet warm car coat, almost always with a fake fur collar. Paul's was way up to date in brow and black wool felt with snuggly fawn collar. Under this Paul wore a ribbed cotton jersey turtle neck sweater in black, and smart houndstooth checked pants in brown and biege. He also wore the very latest fashion in footwear, Chelsea boots, in brown. He carried a thermos flask, which also came with a white mug. The trousers in the pic far right top, are the Made in England version as seen in the original style book drawing.
This outfit was trendy in more ways than one, it heralded the new M1 motorway, officially opened on the 2nd of November 1959, and described as a... "magnificent motorway opening up a new era in road travel, in-keeping with the new, exciting, scientific age in which we live." ..In those days the motorway didn't have a central reservation, crash barriers, speed limit or lighting !
London Look
..and who could disagree...this outfit was straight out of Carnaby Street, Kings Road or Saville Row. A very smartly tailored navy blue wool suit with slim cut pants and jacket. Pauls shirt was also of the very latest fashion, in pale blue with round collar and 'string' tie in navy silk cord. Paul wore a pair of black Chelsea boots with this suit, although brown ones have been seen with it mint in box. Paul wore this suit when taking Sindy to a show.
And so to bed
At bed time Paul wears his smart and trendy crisp cotton blue and white stripe pyjamas and dressing gown all in... 'no collar style with an Oriental touch'...Paul also has a pair of brown one strap sandals and carries a toilet bag bursting with play value goodies, which included..a face cloth, tooth brush, tooth paste, electric razor, brush, comb and bar of soap. This was my all time favourite outfit as a child, and I'd spend hours getting Paul ready for bed and 'shaving' him with his razor ! I bought this outfit mint in box.
Time Off
When Paul relaxed and went out on casual dates and met friends at the coffee bar he wore this fashionable collarless suedette box cut jacket with brass popper fastening and large patch pockets, lined in biege silk. Under his jacket Paul wore a crisp cotton shirt in grey and white check with a round collar and yellow 'string' silk chord 'tie' . His pants were fawn cotton drill and he wore Brown Chelsea boots. He also carried a trendy denim duffle bag for those disk purchases while in town, and he had already had purchased a poster of his favourite group.
Swimming Trunks
For joining Sindy for a swim in the ocean, Paul sported his... 'bikini styled swimsuit'....made in black and blue striped stretch fabric ..'for fit and comfort'..What fun you could have taking the Sindy Set to the beach for the day !
Casual Jacket
For 'smart casual' wear Paul had this stretch collarless jacket in royal blue and black check, fastened at the front with black poppers, a great jacket to make his London Look pants more casual , or his jeans smarter looking. This was also available in a rust and black check with black binded edges, great with his Time Off or Motorway Man pants, or again, with his jeans.
Tee-Shirt
Pauls first seperate was this great easy to wear stretch cotton mesh Tee-Shirt. White, to go with any of his outfits, and sporting a large Paul 'P' printed on the front, a great casual top that was all the rage with teenagers back then.
New for 1966-1967....
Winter Sports
Paul joined Sindy on the slopes in his new Winter Sports outfit. He was all toasty in his thick cotton knit polo necked jersey sweater in bright red with a 'Norwegian' design, he wore a matching bobble cap with snowy white fluffy bobble, and royal blue stretch nylon jersey ski pants. Paul's mittens were quite different to Sindy and Patch's, they were made in PVC, but with the same red stitch detail. Paul carried Snowbird ski's and ski poles, and wore black ski boots, this outfit also came with a pair of ice skates, seen in the right hand picture. A great play value outfit.
Ship Ahoy
Paul had a passion for sailing, one Sindy later took up in 1968. His sailng outfit is made of bright yellow cotton backed PVC. The jacket does up at the front with real, tiny toggles and has collar and pocket flap details. Pants match, and under his jacket Paul wears a juanty navy blue and white striped Tee shirt in cotton jersey knit. On his feet he wears cornflower blue sneakers, and he carries a pair of binoculars, a really nicley detailed outfit. This was was bought mint on card.
Medical Student
Paul joined the local hospital as a medical student in 1966, following in the footsteps of student nurse Sindy. Also following in the 'fashion' for popular TV series such as 'Emergency Ward 10', and 'Dr. Kildare'. Paul's outfit was in crisp white cotton, a smart turtle neck jacket did up at his right side with white poppers, a patch and breast pocket were on his left side, pants matched, and her wore a hygenic mask and white sneakers. Paul carried his own stethoscope and had a litte plastic skeleton for his physiology lessons.
Soccer
Paul followed in the footsteps of Bobby Moore in his soccer outfit in 1966. A great detailed oufit consisting of yellow stretch jersey top with navy collar and hemmed short sleeves. The number 5 was printed in the back in navy as well. Pauls navy shorts had sewn on white stripes down the sides, and stretch nylon navy socks had yellow tops. This oufit is far from mint, but it'll 'do' for now ! The outfit also came with ball, shin pads and soccer boots.
Tennis Party
Game set and match to Paul in his natty tennis outfit for 1967. Paul cuts a dashing fiure at the centre court in his cotton 'airtex' Fred Perry tennis shirt with collar, two popper fastening at the neck and real Fred Perry logo on the left breast. Crisp white cotton shorts and collarless jacket compliment each other, and Pul carries his racket, press, and tube with three tennis balls, this also came with white nylon socks. I great outfit and one to complimemnt Sindy's tennis outfit, 'Centre Court'.
Raincoat
Paul' trendy new raincoat was tailored in crisp navy cotton with collar, lapel and pocket flap detils, and a 'silver' buckled belt to 'nip' in the waist and give Paul that 'continental look'. Paul certainly knew how to dress, that's for sure!
Shirt
Paul's casual shirt is in robust cotton, checked green, brown, with collar detail and white popper fastening. It's ideal worn with his jeans for summer picnics .
Blazer
For cocktails at the yacht club with Sindy after a fun day of sailing, Paul dons his smart navy blue wool felt blazer with collar and lapel detail, and his initial in 'gold' on the breast pocket. Shiny brass poppers do up at the front. Sindy must be very proud of her well dressed boyfriend.
Paul's only scensetter.....
Paul's Scooter
Pauls so hip and trendy with his white Vespa scooter, he really is a mod now ! It has lots of great detail, 'chrome' effect breaks, headlamp, hooter, and trims, with 'Pedigree' written across the front. It has it's own tax disk D39101...Dec 1967....Private...12 months...and licience plates...LIB3478, LIB no doubt refering to Lines Brothers, the parent company of Pedigree. The scooter has a black seat complete with seat belt and black rubber tires with realistec tread..but best of all, it actually works ! A battery is stored under the seat, and stabliser wheels stop it from falling over as Paul scoots along the hall floor ! Great fun !
