Seaside or Poolside with Sindy
1963-1985. Pedigree Dolls and Toys Limited. Sindy is a registered trademark of Pedigree Dolls And Toys Limited.
Wherever Sindy goes, she looks great, even at the seaside on the beach, or at the poolside sipping cocktails, she's always number one in the fashion stakes when it comes to cool, trendy leisure wear. Here's some of the wonderful creations Pedigree gave our Sunshine girl throughout the years....
'Mix and Match with various Sindy and Patch pieces... Patch's towel from 1966's 'Water Wings', Sindy's 1965 'Sweet Swimmer' swimming costume and sandals, Sunglasses from 1964's 'Seaside Sweetheart', and the 'Hat', from 1968's 'Hat, Bag and Shoes'.
1971 Happy Holidays
Here's an outfit you may have seen if you have looked through the 1971 Style book, named 'Happy Holidays'...as far as collectors are aware up until no, this outfit was never made.
But now, Thanks to Helen Carter, you can have a copy of it..just click on any of this text to go to Helens FAB website/Boutique.
Happy Holidays is mad in good quality cotton and consists of a beautiful deep orange short sleeve shirt and matching elasicated waist shorts, a halter top and popper front mini skirt a yellow and orange striped thicker cotton, and an orange terry toweling beach bag, Trendy Girl Sindy is seen here in the first picture posing just like the style book photo, wearing sunglasses from the same period.
1973 Funtime Sindy
1973´s 'Funtime' Sindy was released in this cute little two piece, a very bright swimsuit/ 'playsuit' in stretch nylon, striped with white, orange, sky blue and 'luminous' green. It really suits this blonde Sindy and shows her hair and eye colour off really well. Over her swimsuit Sindy wears a wrap-a-round mini skirt in the same nylon, edged in orange stitch detail and finished with two gold bead 'buttons' at the waistband. A really fun and colourfull outfit. This Funtime Sindy was the very first 'Funtime' Sindy to be released. She had starfish hands on shorter than usual arms, and a non twist waist. Her hair was the very delicate hair that early Sindy's in the 70s had, but, there seems to be a fair amount of this particular Funtime that have survived in great condition, this one included, I didn't have to do anything to her hair, it's still minty. I think she is THE prettiest Sindy ever produced, a real 'dolly' doll, with her cute face, rosy cheeks and soft, bouncy curls.
1974 Funtime Sindy
1974s 'Funtime Sindy' wore the very same swim suit, but the actual Sindy was different to the previous years model, although the previous years model was shown in the 74 style book ? 74s Funtime was smaller and thinner, she had long, slim legs that were hard and didn't bend. Gone were the starfish hands, and in were the delicate Sindy hands we all know so well. Her skin tone all over was almost like fine porcelaine, and she still had the early Sindy hair that tends to go wooly very easily if overbrushed. This one was like that until I boilpermed it back to glossy, soft curls. A really pretty basic Sindy.
1975 Funtime Sindy
1975's 'Funtime' Sindy was issued in this gorgeous Mediteraniun blue swim suit in stretch nylon with a slight waffle effect. Sindy's initial is printed in white at the bottom. and she wears one strap 'daisy' sandals for those beach walks, a simple yet really lovely little outfit. This poor Sindy has really been played to death withm, her limbs are all very loose and she has some scratches, I won her in a lot, but after a boil perm, I just love here, she's called 'Lucy'..because of her loose limbs ! Ha Ha...
1975 Sunflower
1975s 'Sunflower' is one of the more popular collectors outfits, and you can see why, great detail, fabulous sunshine colours that just make you smile from ear to ear, and four seperate pieces of clothing, great value for money and great play value, Pedigree at it's best. Made in a good quality deep orange cotton sprinkled with 'Mary Quant' style daisy flowers in white, sunshine yellow and cornflower blue, all peices edged in sunshine yellow polyester binding, the wrap is also made of polyester with the cotton material as binding. A really great outfit.
1976 In The Swim
'In The Swim' provided Sindy with a bikini to go swimming in, and a gorgeously luxurious robe to wrap herself in once out of the water. It sometimes came with these 'granny' glasses as well, but boxed sets have also been seen without them. I haven't got the bikini, which is in the same fabric as the binding and matching tie belt, stretch jersey polyester. I just love those rich colours together, royal blue, navy blue, yellow, red and green, trimming the terry toweling robe in a stunning shade of cornflower blue. Whoever worked at Pedigree on these outfits this year certainly had a wonderful eye for colour and pattern.
1976 Beachcomber
1976 'Beachcomber', this wonderful almost 50s style high cut shorts and shirt combi. The shorts are light cotton chambray and the gorgeous bright red and white gingham shirt is a cool, crisp cotton, tied at the midrift and matching Sindys headscarf, I just love this outfit, which has taken me forever to complete ! White daisy one strap sandals finish the outfit off.
1981 Summertime Fun Sindy
Pedigree released 'Summertime Fun'   Sindy in 1981. A basic body Sindy with the usual 'ballerina' hairstyle, I've used my unique bobbed cut brunette Sindy for this picture. 'Summertime Fun' Sindy was released in this lovely simple stretch nylon jersey swimsuit in deep fuscia pink with delicate shoulder straps in the same colour. Another of those 'less is more' 'outfits', really lovely.
1981 Beachcomber
An unusual beach outfit for 81 was 'Beachcomber' , quite different to the 76 shorts and crop shirt outfit though ! This time Sindy wore a light blue pair of denim dungarees, in perfect detail. She had a sun visor (very fashionable at the time) to match, and also a matching shoulder bag. Under her dungarees Sindy wore a stretch nylon jersey sweater in bright canary yellow. Wedge heel clogs matched this. A really lovey oufit.
1981 Beach party
One of Sindy's prettiest beach outfits was introduced in 1981, 'Beach Party', a much overlooked Sindy fashion, was a dungaree style outfit in crisp cotton searsucker with a white cotton halter strap neck. The colour was beautiful, a rich shade of pink with colourful stripes of royal blue, white, orange and magenta running down it, Sindy wore her simple one strap wedged sandals in white with this outfit and looked ready to turn all heads at any beach party she attented.
1982 Beach Girl
From the 'Fun Fashion' range in 1982 came 'Beach Girl', a simple white stretch jersey T-Shirt with baby blue, candy pink and navy blue stripes. Sindy had a choice of either white light weight cool cotton shorts with fushia stitch detail and turn ups, or royal blue skin tight pedal pushers with slits at the side, bottom of the legs. Both items being very popular and very fashionable at the time, a clever but simple outfit.
1982 Sunshine Sindy
1982 saw the release of the basic body, 'pocket money' range Sindy 'Sunshine Sindy'. She was issued with just a swimsuit and sunglasses but was just adorable. The 'Lady Di' hairstyle Sindy was used. Sindy wore a very pretty one piece swimming costume in stretch nylon with ocean blue and white horizontal strips across it, satin cords did up behind her neck and held the top up, which had a little ruche detail at the centre of the bust to give it shape. A really simple yet really stunning little swim suit. In the style book Sindy is shown wearing orange wrap around sunglasses, but I think the blue ones look much better with this swim suit.
1983 Holiday Girl Sindy
1983's 'Holiday Girl' Sindy was all set to share your summer holiday with you ! I love the contrasting colours of this lovely outfit, french lavender and jade green. Holiday Girl Sindy was the 'Lady Di' haircut Sindy, and wore a deep jade green all in one swimming costume in stretch jersey nylon, trimmed near the neck with   lavender and cream ribbon stripes and fastened with a halter strap in lavender at the back of the neck.Over this Sindy wore a beach wrap in light, crisp lavender cotton edged in cream binding with the same binding used as the tie 'belt'. Holiday Girl Sindy accessorised with white one strap sandals, green wrap round visor sun glasses and a real 'coolie' style straw hat, This also came with a grey steroe radio-cassette player.
1983 Ahoy There
'Ahoy There' shouted Sindy in this very fashionable 1983 outfit. Princess Diana bringing the 'sailor' look well and truly back in fashion. Sindy wears a lovely bright white cotton drill 'suit' of long, pleat front shorts and matching bolero jacket with sailor collar trimmed with navy blue satin ribbon, this is also used to fasten the front of the jacket with a neat bow. Under this Sindy wears a red and white horizontal striped stretch nylon top with white satin ribbon shoulder straps. Sindy's summer hat is of white felt with a red satinn ribbon 'hat band' , and Sindy carries her beach gear in a lightwieght cotton duffle bag, 'kit bag' style with draw string ties and pretty navy and white ribbon trim detail. White courts finish off this very smart outfit.
1983 Swimsuit And Jacket
From te seperates range in 1983, was a very smart casuals outfit 'Swimsuit and Jacket'. This really is a good example of the 'less is more' sayin..... simple materials, crisp, simple tailoring, and the result is one of Sindy's smartest holiday outfits. A pillar box red, stretch nylon jersey swimsuit with rauched top and white halter straps, is covered by a crisp light cotton jacket in 'Punch and Judy' kiosk red and white stripes, collar and lapel detail, and patch pockets, and a breast pocket with contrasting, smart, jade green hanky. This realy should have been issued as an outfit rather than a casuals range item.
1984 Beach Party Sindy
1984 saw the arrival of 'Beach Party' Sindy...A real collectors Sindy now, Long soft, silky, side parted straight hair right down to her waist, in pale blonde, brunette or Titian. Sindy wore a cute cotton blouse in white, with multi coloured polka dots all over it. The neck was ruffled and the full legth sleeves puffed and elasticated near the wrist. Sindy's cropped jean were exceptionaly realistic, made in real heavy weight denim and with real back pockets, all stitched with red cotton, perfect detail ! These were finished off with a white cotton cord 'belt' . Sindy accessorised with a red radio cassette player, red clog mules, a stretch jersey 'barrel' shoulder beach bag and a green pvc sun visor, great attention to detail and tons of fabulous Pedigree play value, a real winner all round.
Pedigree issued retailers with a series of posters to help promote Sindy in 1984, in a rather cheeky, tongue in cheek, 'Playboy' style. Now a great collectable.
One featured Beach Party Sindy, in great detail, with a beach backdrop, can you see another Sindy sitting at her patio set, on the beach behind Beach Party Sindy. For added realisim Pedigree popped Beach Party Sindy's head onto an active body for better poseability.
1984 Swimsuit And Jacket
The 1984 'Casuals' range continued the same idea of the 'Swimsuit and Jacket'..this time elaborating both the swimsuit and jacket with a multi zig zag´striped insert detail in pepper red, navy blue and sunny yellow, this was added to one half of the swimsuit, and was used for the pockets, cuffs and outer collar of the blousen style jacket with red cord tie hem..I love this little outfit and it looks fantastic of this blonde active Sindy. Notice the subtle difference of this Sindy and the one above, which is a Marx, USA active Sindy.
1984 Top, Shorts and Skirt
Also from 1984s 'Cauals' range came   'Top, Shorts and Skirt' . Made in crisp, cool cotton, this brightly coloured outfit would insure Sindy was the bell of the beach. The short sleeved top and shorts were striped with navy, red, golden yellow and cornflower blue on a white background, and to co-ordinate with the golden yellow was a wrap round sarong style skirt. This titian Beach Party Sindy sets the outfit off to perfection.
1985 Beach Life
For the beach in 1985, Sindy chose her 'Beach Life' hotpants ! The last time Sindy wore hotpants similar to these was way back in 1972 ! But what a great 1985 revamp of an all time fashion classic ! In a gorgeous bright green lightwieght cotton, perfect for summer, Rope tie belt and turn ups featured. Under these Sindy wore a thick stretch cotton 3/4 sleeve sweatshirt with elasticated sleeves. Cute Bobby socks and green court shoes finished off her groovy summer outfit. This outfit was mint from pack.
Pedigree issued Sindy and Paul with five styles of sunglasses from 1963-1986. Here they are at a glance............
In the 60's Sindy wore fashionable 'Cats Eye' sunglasses with black frames and green lenses. these were issued with 'Seaside Sweetheart' and 'Winter Holiday'. Paul wore very smart and trendy hexaganol sunglasses, with a half frame in black, and green lenses. These were issued with 'Seaside'.
A dramatic change in 1971 as all things flower power and Hippy hit the fashion scene, and Sindy follows suit in her brand new white framed, round 'granny' sunglasses, seen here with rose tinted lenses, they were also issued with orange tinted lenses. These were issued with 1971's 'Winter Sports'.......... shown with 'Wavy Navy' in the 75 style book, although I can't be 100% certain that it was issued with them.......... 1976's 'Jet Set (as seen here).......... and apparently also 1976's 'In The Swim', confirmation of this would be great please. Also 'GlobeTrotter' accessorey pack also of 1976.
By 1977 it was time for a change again, out went hippy fashion and in came the sleek, new look of Wrap around, ski goggle style sunglasses. Strangly, these never seem to be included in any of Sindy's outfits ? Only with actual Sindy's, or Scenesetters.

As far as I can make out, these were first issued with   'Sunlounger' ( see 'setting the scene' section) in orange. Although 'Globe Trotter' was carried forward from 1976, still with the granny glasses in according to the style book.

The next issue with the wraparound sunglasses in was 1979's 'Winter Holiday' another scenesetter set, featuring sledge and ski's ( see 'setting the scene' section) again, the sunglasses were in orange.

In 1980 they were issued with 'Garden Furniture' ( see section as above) again in orange....In 1982 'Sunshine Sindy' was released, with the popular new look 'Lady Di' hairstyle, she also wore orange wraparounds. In 1983 ' Holiday Girl ' Sindy was released, wearing green wraparounds, see above middle picture. Also released that year was 'Leisure Time' accessorey pack, containing   pair of   wraparounds in blue, which matched the jug and high ball tumbler glasses that also came in the pack, also included were Sindy's fith style of sunglasses, another pair of 'granny' glasses, this time all in one colour, orange, see picture below. . In 1984 wraparounds were issued in the new 'Keeping Fit' scenesetter, either in blue or green ( part of set featured above in right hand photo)...And in 1985 Sindy got yet another pair of orange wraparounds, this time with her new 'Leisure Pool'.
1983's 'Granny' style sunglasses came with the 'Leisure Time' pack, consisting of these, blue wraparound sunglasses, a jug and two highball tumbler glasses in blue, a green bottle of wine, a yellow bottle of suntan lotion, SLR camera with strap, and a green sun visor, everything Sindy needed for a day at the beach or sunbathing in the garden, and great for her to pack in her case for that family holiday. Excellent play value.
