May 24th- James Marsden is featured in this month's issue of Men's Health.
Article;   Actor James Marsden has learned the secret to excelling in every part of his life: Stop trying so damn hard ADVERTISEMENTA few years ago, actor James Marsden -- you know him as Cyclops from the X-Men films -- learned a horrible truth: Perfection, that mythical state that bewitches so many of us, is pure fool's gold. How does he know? He achieved it -- or got close, at least -- and it sucked.

Consider the physical ideal: single-digit body-fat percentage, shredded muscles, abs that could grate Parmesan cheese. That's what every man (and his woman) wants, right? Several years ago, Marsden worked hard to lower his body fat for a photo shoot. He reached his goal but was a dehydrated, miserable husk. Sure, he had the six-pack and the carved muscles. But his face had melted down to skin over bone. "I looked in the mirror," he says, "and I looked ill."

That unhealthy physical "ideal" turned out to be bogus. Marsden found that he'd betrayed his own happy, balanced lifestyle for a shrink-wrapped set of abs he'd have trouble maintaining. He refuses to make that mistake again. "You shouldn't have to give up things that you love in life," he says. "Yeah, you want to look good, but it's not necessary to look like the statue of David every time you take your shirt off. I'd rather look healthy, have a sound mind, and be comfortable in my own skin."

That's a challenge we all face: how to find our own sweet spots in life -- with fitness, with relationships, and with career. Marsden, 33, has some good ideas, and he's used them to develop a satisfying, complete life in a town (Hollywood) and a career (acting) in which tranquillity can usually be reached only by using a thousand-dollar-an-hour yogi, or something cooked in a spoon.

Exercise For The Joy Of It
It's a different matter if you have to lose weight, but if you're lean and healthy, why make exercise unpleasant? Marsden takes everything outside unless he's training for a role. "The gym mentality doesn't work for me," he says. "It's too isolating. I have to be outdoors chasing a ball. And I feel substantially better about myself when I do." His sports: basketball, volleyball, and occasionally football -- always with his buddies.

Master A Few Things
Marsden is a self-described "hobbyist." That doesn't mean he takes his interests lightly, however. His hobbies: singing, guitars, piano, home recording, and photography. "I hate being mediocre," he says. "If I really want to learn something, I immerse myself in it. That consumes every ounce of my thoughts until I'm really good at it."

Control Your Inner Mirror Addict
Take it from Marsden, who works in the vainest industry in existence: Liking how you look is okay. Loving it, however, is poisonous. "I've seen people get sucked into that addiction of reaching goals," he says. "It starts something in your brain. If I could just add another inch to my biceps, you think. Then you achieve that. You think you'll be happy, but you won't be, because someone will walk in with arms bigger than yours. So you get wrapped up in that psychology of bigger, bigger, bigger, less fat, less fat, less fat. But if you could step back and look at yourself, you'd go, Oh my God. Never in a million years would I want to be caught up in that."
Force Coworkers and Bosses to See You in a Different Light
The man who became famous playing Cyclops, an iconic comic-book hero, will next be singing up a storm in, of all things, the movie Hairspray, and playing a handsome prince in Disney's Enchanted. They were deliberate choices by Marsden. "If you try to play your career like a game, you'll drive yourself crazy," he says. "I'm sure your average 18 to 25-year-old man will be going, 'Cyclops doing song and dance? Are you kidding me?' But ultimately, it will help me diversify. If you have the chance to do what you want to do instead of what you think people want you to do, you have to take it. That alone will prove you're multifaceted." Then he laughs. "Or at least that you had the balls to try."

Crave Structure
Marrying actress Lisa Linde in 2000 and having son Jack (now 6) and daughter Mary (almost 2) was anything but a ball and chain for Marsden. "I needed the structure [of family life]," he says. "I used to be the type of guy who would aimlessly do whatever he wanted. When you're single, you don't want to change or give up what you have. But for me now, the challenge is wanting to spend so much time with my kids, because it's so fulfilling that it's hard to do anything else. I like being in my 30s. There's something about being married and having kids that makes you feel strong and fulfilled. My confidence is high. All that structure has something to do with that."

Hit These Sweet Spots
1. Make Anyone Laugh

The longer the joke, the more payoff expected from the punch line, according to researchers at LaughLab, a humor think tank in England. They found the ideal length for a joke is just 103 words; we'll make it even easier. Your best bet for a yuk? Can the canned humor altogether. Instead of one-liners and anecdotes, throw a self-effacing "humorang" to show you're self-confident. Or harness the power of cumulative, alley-oop humor: Your friend says he's fit; you say you're so fit your abs have abs.

2. Master Your Chops

Pierce that prime cut with a thermometer and the juices will escape. Pocket the probe and observe: A rare steak won't release any juices, and an overcooked steak will have puddles of brown juice on top. For a masterly   medium-rare, remove the steak just as bright-red beads begin to form on the surface. Double-check with your finger: The steak should be firm but yielding, like a Nerf football. Let it rest for 10 minutes so the hot juices soak back into the meat.

3. Launch a Longer Drive

Whack a golf ball on the downswing with your driver and you'll generate too much backspin, sacrificing distance. To really take your drives deep, tee the ball up higher, so that the upper half extends past the top of your club, and move it forward in your stance. "Play the ball off your left big toe," says Scott Sackett, director of instruction at the PGA Tour Golf Academy, in St. Augustine, Florida. "You'll catch the ball on your upswing, which means less spin and more distance."

4. Pinpoint Her Pleasure

There's more to finding gold than locating treasure island. Once you've coaxed your way to her erotic epicenter, the clitoris, focus on two specific spots, at the 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock positions. "Because of the grouping of nerves, those are the particularly sensitive sweet spots for most women," says Joy Davidson, Ph.D., author of Fearless Sex. With your finger or tongue, make circles around her hot button, increasing pressure slightly when you cross the more sensitive areas.

May 16th- Hairspray on Oprah! Incase you missed it!
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Based on the Broadway musical (which itself was based on a cult favorite 1988 film by offbeat director John Waters), the movie musical Hairspray takes place in racially segregated 1960s Baltimore. A teenager named Tracy Turnblad is determined to get a role on a local teen show called The Corny Collins Show.

Tracy's mother, Edna, is against it—but her father, Wilbur, encourages her. The station manager, Velma Von Tussle, hates both Edna and the show's monthly "Negro day," hosted by Motormouth Maybelle, in which African-American teens are allowed on. When "Negro day" is cancelled, Tracy leads a civil rights march.

While it contains a serious message, Hairspray is also a terrifically fun singing and dancing extravaganza. "Go with all your friends. Take your family. It's so entertaining," Oprah says. "It's fantastic!"

The cast performs three songs from the movie—"Good Morning Baltimore," "Ladies Choice" and "Run and Tell That."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Hairspray features John Travolta in a way you've never seen him before. He plays Tracy's mom, Edna, in a dress and a fat suit!

John says he is just the guy to play Edna. "I grew up with some fantastic women—my mother, my sisters—and they were all performers. So I saw them on Broadway, I saw them in summer theater, and I have mental image pictures of women in these kinds of performances. I probably have the best library of memories for this kind of thing."

One aspect of Edna that John was particularly excited about was her voice. Hairspray gave him a chance to use the distinctive Baltimore accent he learned while shooting 2004's Ladder 49 in Charm City.

"At first … I think that everyone was frightened of the accent, because maybe it wouldn't be understandable or perhaps it would be too eccentric or something," John says. "And I said, 'But it helps me because it's slightly feminine.'"

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
If you didn't know Edna was played by John, you could easily miss the distinctive star under his makeup and curvaceous prosthetics, which took five hours every day to assemble. But he says it was worth it. "I do not want you for one second to think it's a man. … I wanted you to believe her." John says. "So I said, 'The bigger the breasts, the bigger the bust, the smaller the waist, the better we'll be.'"

John, who's so famous for his dance moves, says he worked hard to figure out how Edna should dance. "The trick with her was to behave as though she was 100 pounds instead of 300 pounds," he says. "And the more I could make you believe that she was light on her feet, I thought was the key."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Three-time Oscar®-nominee Michelle Pfeiffer plays Velma Von Tussle, Hairspray's dastardly station manager who dislikes both Tracy and the monthly "Negro day."

Michelle says that she was initially hesitant to play a meaner character, but was encouraged to go for it. "And then by the end of it, you had to rein me in!"

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Michelle says she had thought about taking some time off, but when she read the script for Hairspray, she felt like she couldn't pass up the role of Velma.

She knew she'd made the right choice very early on…the first time the cast was together! "We had the read-through, and it was one of the most magical working experiences I've ever had," she says.

The choreographed scenes, Michelle says, were exhausting. "It's triple the work—not only the acting but the singing, the dancing," she says. "It's challenging, but it's a lot of fun."

John agrees. "It fills your cup. If you have those abilities—you can act, sing and dance—and you're not used to doing all three at once, it's very satisfying."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Rounding out Hairspray's all-star cast is Grammy® winner and Oscar® nominee Queen Latifah. She plays Motormouth Maybelle, hostess of The Corny Collins Show's once-a-month "Negro day" that is in peril of being canceled.

Queen Latifah worked with producer Neil Meron on Chicago and director Adam Shankman on Bringing Down the House, so she says she thought it would be fun to join them on this new movie. For Neil, there was no other Maybelle. "She was the only choice," Neil says. "The only choice."

Despite all the upbeat energy of Hairspray, Latifah says she kept in mind its underlying theme of racial segregation—especially during a scene in which Maybelle participates in a protest march. "As fun as it was … you look around and you're like, 'Wow, the black people are separated from the white people,'" Latifah says. "And if this was really this time, we would be in a combative situation and we really would be fighting to change things. But the truth is, we really went through that. So underneath, in my mind, it was always there. I wouldn't allow it to be a total comedy in my own head."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Although musicals require a lot of hard work, Latifah says she loves it. "I like the challenge of rehearsing with acting and dancing and singing and being pushed to your limits and your stamina, having to stay up all the time," she says. "It's wonderful. I think it's the most enjoyable kind of filming to do."

Latifah says when she first saw John in his full Edna costume—complete with the curvaceous body suit—she knew he would nail the role. "We walked into a rehearsal at the same time, and they were choreographing him, and his little tush was shaking. It's like, 'That's John Travolta right there,'" she says. "I'm like, 'He is about to work this.' And then when I saw the costume, it had a body. It had curves. It wasn't just—it was a real woman."

As John danced with his prosthetic legs, Latifah says she was even a little jealous! "The legs on the daggone thing—him, her—were gorgeous, and I'm a little tomboy growing up and I tore my knees up," she says. "I'm like, 'Look at those pretty legs on John!'"

Just months before the release of Hairspray, newcomer Nikki Blonsky was a typical 17-year-old girl working at an ice cream shop. Now, she is starring alongside John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and Queen Latifah!

The nationwide search for Hairspray's central character, Tracy Turnblad, took months. After the producers had seen hundreds of actresses, Nikki stole the show. "I called the producers and the studio, actually, and I said, 'I think it's going to be this girl, and she works in an ice cream parlor,'" says Adam Shankman, Hairspray's director.

But instead of just telling Nikki she had the part, the producers decided to surprise her! They told Nikki they were following the final four potential Tracys with a camera, and they began filming her at the ice cream shop. Then, they asked her to watch a videotaped message from Adam. "Hey, Nikki. I think that you should probably, you know, make yourself a big ice cream cone because it's you, honey. You got the part!" he said.

Nikki was so excited, she was screaming! "I'm standing here today because I followed my dreams and my dreams came true," Nikki says.
(they also showed her audition video!)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Nikki says ever since she saw Hairspray for the first time on Broadway when she was 15, she knew she wanted the role of Tracy. "Growing up, I was always happy, but this has just made me the happiest kid in America—I think in the world," she says.

With her newfound success, Nikki says she did one thing to pamper herself. "When I got home, I was so excited. I said, 'I have to do something for myself. I have to buy myself a new bed, because I've had the same bed for 18 years,'" she says.

The first time she walked onto the set, Nikki says she was extremely nervous to meet her famous co-stars—until she saw John Travolta. "I walked into a room and there he stood, and he said, 'Come to Mama!'" she says. "Then I knew it would be amazing."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Acting in Hairspray was also a dream come true for Zac Efron—who starred in the Disney Channel hit movie High School Musical—and Elijah Kelley. Zac says it was amazing to work on Hairspray. "Look at the cast. That's it right there," he says. "I can't believe I was lucky enough to be a part of this film."

Elijah says his parents both quit their jobs in LaGrange, Georgia, so he could move to California to follow his dream of acting. "My dad was like, 'You've got to get a job.' And my mom was like, 'No, we're going to support him,'" he says. "They came together collectively, and a few weeks later we were on a plane with nothing but clothes and faith, out to L.A. to pursue my dream."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Before they say goodbye, the dancers from Hairspray perform "You Can't Stop the Beat." Queen Latifah jokes that the cast calls the song, "You Can't Stop to Breathe," because the dancers go nonstop to the fast, fun song! Enjoy the singing, dancing and wacky fun of Hairspray when it hits theaters July 20, 2007.

That was a good Oprah lol!

May 11th- Brittany Snow recently attended a launch party for clothing company ‘Lyric Culture’ in Hollywood, California.

Brittany spoke to WireImage about Hairspray.

WI: Hairspray is a musical. It’s huge!

Brittany: Yeah, it’s going to be great. I just saw it, actually a couple of weeks ago and it’s amazing. It’s just breathtaking- it’s so good. I am just honored to be apart of it. It’s cool.

WI: Any surprises we’re going to see from this, that wasn’t in the old (Hairspray)?

Brittany: Well, John Travolta dressed as a woman is going to be a huge surprise! I think everyone is going to be a little shocked at first, but I think it’s really cool and he steals your heart, he’s so, so loveable. It’s so cool. So, I’m excited for everyone to see that.

WI: What was it like being apart of (Hairspray)? It’s amazing to see this movie remade.

Brittany: Yeah, it is. It’s a huge honor. Ya know, it’s one of my favorite movies, and getting to sing, dance and act all at the same time, three of my favorite passions. And then also be a part of such an ensemble cast, that’s icons ya know? It’s very flattering and it was just a huge, huge ‘high’ the entire time making it. Getting to do something that great. So, it was very fun.

May 6th- Calendarlive.com on Nikki Blonsky.

Her size is actually a big plus
‘Hairspray’ needed a zaftig teen queen. Nikki Blonsky needed to be discovered.

By Rachel Abramowitz

New York — IT’S easy to see who Nikki Blonsky was just a year ago. On YouTube, there is footage of a then-unknown girl — small, chubby and makeup-less and completely forgettable in black jeans and a schlumpy black T-shirt, scooping ice cream in a Cold Stone Creamery on Long Island.

There’s also footage from the moment Blonsky left scooping for good — “Entertainment Tonight” showed up to film the 17-year-old receiving the news that she’d won the part of Tracy Turnblad in the new screen musical “Hairspray.” In the clip, Blonsky begins yelling, throws her hands over her face and then promptly falls off her chair, crying hysterically. “I’m shaking. I’m surprised I’m still standing,” she tells the interviewer.

And then she belts in a startling vibrato: “I love you, Baltimore!”

Less than a year after she was anointed, Blonsky already looks streamlined and professional as she poses for pictures in the rarefied climes of Porterhouse, a fancy Manhattan steakhouse. Professional makeup makes her eyes appear alert and doe-like; her hair now cascades over her delicate white blouse — cinched precisely with a huge red belt. She totters on red platforms that add a few inches to her 4-foot, 10-inch frame. While she kind of flopped around in the pre-fame videotape posted by New Line studios, she now perkily holds her hands to her face in a semi-straight, semi-mocking send-up of an old-fashioned publicity still.

Without a doubt, the 18-year-old Blonsky is hurtling through Hollywood’s star-making machinery. If New Line, which is releasing “Hairspray,” gets its wish, she will become the Jennifer Hudson of 2007, the unsuspecting, unlikely ingénue who by dint of her sheer talent gets to be queen for the day.

May 4th- Womens Wear Daily (May 4) reveals limited edition Hairspray cans are on their way to a salon near you!

“While color is always a hot topic, styling products can perfect a summer coif. Sebastian Professional, the maker of Shaper and Shaper Plus Hair Spray, looks to raise its profile in a deal that makes them the official stylers for the summer movie remake of “Hairspray.” The partnership with New Line Cinema called for specially designed, limited edition cans that will be available in salons in June for about $13 to $14 per 10.6-oz container.”

Label artwork has yet to be released. It is not known if these cans will replicate the fictitious Hair Spray company “Ultra Clutch” (which sponsors “The Corny Collins Show” in Hairspray) or a brand new design to reflect the movie.

May 3rd- New York Times Arts & Leisure (May 6) on our Hairspray heroine, Nikki Blonsky.

Summer Movie Preview - “Breaking Through” by Karen Durbin

Nikki Blonsky, the astonishing imp who plays Tracy Turnblad in the new movie version of “Hairspray” (July 20), has a back story almost as good as Tracy’s. For anyone unacquainted with John Waters’s 1988 movie or the hit Broadway musical, Tracy is a heavyset teenager in 1962 Baltimore who longs to be one of the cool kids on the Corny Collins television dance show and ends up its star.

Ms. Blonsky, now 18, is a heavyset teenager from Great Neck, N.Y., with many school productions on her resumé but no professional experience. Told last year that New Line Cinema was conducting a national search for the perfect girl to play Tracy in the film adaptation of the musical, she made a video of herself doing two of the show’s numbers and snail-mailed it to the studio’s New York address. Not sure who it was intended for, a young man in the mailroom posted it on the production’s myspace site, where the casting director watched it and summoned Ms. Blonsky to audition for the director, Adam Shankman.

Ms. Blonsky was at her after-school job scooping ice cream at the Cold Stone Creamery in Great Neck when she got the good news that the part was hers. Cameras, there under false pretenses, caught her reaction. It was worth it: Ms. Blonsky, who is 4 feet 10 inches tall, jumps back at least a foot, shrieking in astonishment.

That offbeat spontaneity pervades her performance, whether she’s earnestly telling her mother (a heavily latexed John Travolta, looking like a giant bath toy), “I don’t wanna be a laundress, I wanna be famous,” or belting out the line “I love you, Baltimore” with such sweet powerhouse conviction that you find yourself starting to love it too. Surrounded by stars who know how to sparkle plenty, she becomes the incandescent core of every number she’s in.

“Usually you have to watch out for beginners, help them pace themselves to keep energy up,” Mr. Shankman said at a party for the production. “But Tracy became the benchmark for all of us, a reminder of how it feels to be brand new and having the time of your life.”

April 19th- Nikki Blonsky and Adam Shankman were
recently at the 2007 ASCAP Film & Television Music Awards and were asked by Wireimage.com about Hairspray.

WI: I’m just curious. In the movie, what were your favorite songs or favorite scenes in Hairspray?

Adam: Favorite songs or scenes in Hairspray… It’s weird because I had to reinvent the staging of everything and I repurposed placement and stuff like that, so even today it keeps changing and shifting. Everyday I have a new kind of favorite moment. Right now I am deeply in love with “Without Love.” (To Nikki) You haven’t seen “Without Love” yet?

Nikki: I have not seen it yet.

Adam: Yeah, “Without Love” is pretty hot and heavy with me right now. But ya know, “You Can’t Stop The Beat,” and Marc (Shamain) has written some new songs that I am falling even more in love with. But “Without Love” is pretty great.

Nikki: I think the one closest to my heart is “Good Morning Baltimore,” because I have been audtioning with it for like two and a half years of my life. So to be able to sit down and listen to my version of it…

Adam: Ohhhh! That looong show-biz career of yours, two and a half years!

In stores soon: Hairspray’s Amber von Tussel (played by Brittany Snow), left, Link Larkin (Zac Efron),Tracy Turnblad (Nicole Blonsky), Mom Edna (John Travolta), Seaweed J. Stubbs (Elijah Kelley) and Penny Pingleton (Amanda Bynes).

USA TODAY by William Keck

Step aside, Barbie.

A couple of extra-hip dollies with their extra-size hips are shaking their bon-bons on the toy scene. Meet Baltimore’s own Tracy Turnblad and her mother, Edna.

The plus-size plastic dolls are modeled after the characters portrayed by Nicole Blonsky and John Travolta in the musical comedy remake of Hairspray. It opens July 20.

Getting a look at her doll for the very first time, Blonsky’s heart melts.

“I’m a doll!” Blonsky coos by phone from her New York home. “Oh, my goodness, it’s me. It’s adorable. The first thing I’m noticing are the chubby hands and short fingers. That may sound weird, but I have very small hands, and those are my hands.”

Blonsky, 18, also praises the doll’s spot-on striped wig and outfit, a look Tracy sports in the Run and Tell That dance sequence that precedes her first encounter with Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah) in a record store in the 1960s-era movie.

“I’m so glad they picked that look,” Blonsky says. “When I was dancing in this, I felt a lot of energy. This is Tracy in her element.”

Travolta, who has been made into a doll before as his character Vinnie Barbarino in the 1970s Welcome Back, Kotter, is particularly taken with this new likeness.

“It is very cute,” he says by e-mail after getting a glimpse. The outfit is “perfect,” and he can’t wait to show it to his wife, Kelly Preston, and their daughter, Ella, 7, who “will really like it.”

Zac Efron, who shot to stardom in last year’s High School Musical, plays Link Larkin, the beau of Tracy’s rival.

“Having a doll of yourself is completely surreal,” he says. But he praises this diverse collection as a reflection of a movie that is loaded with “amazing, uplifting messages.”

Blonsky also praises the doll diversity.

Having grown up in Great Neck, N.Y., Blonsky remembers dragging her mother to Toys ‘R Us on weekends to go shopping for new dolls — only to be disappointed by the limited selection.

“None of the dolls looked different than any of the other ones,” she recalls. “I think the Tracy and Edna dolls will open a lot of kids’ eyes out there — especially when they are on shelves next to Barbie and the Hilary Duff and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen dolls.

“Now girls will have an opportunity to pick a different doll. Because let’s face it, most of us don’t look like the Size 2 shapes we see on TV. You can have just as much fun with Tracy and Edna — if not even more.”

The dolls hit stores in July and range in height from 10½ to 12 inches. Suggested retail: $15. Singing versions of Tracy and Link (in different costumes and hairstyles) will sell for $20-$25.

And you might want to hurry to beat Blonsky to the shelves.

Says the young star: “I told my mother, ‘Guess what everybody’s Christmas present is going to be?’ There is not going to be one friend or family member in my life that does not have one of these.”

He adds of Hairspray, in which he cross-dresses to play EDNA TURNBLAD, "Oh yeah, it's a full-throttle musical. It's my first musical since Grease and interestingly enough, it's almost ended up like a sequel to it. "Grease took place in 1959, lets say, and Hairspray takes place in 1962. "The choreography is great, you're going to see gimmicky numbers. I do a whole TINA TURNER dance thing. I enjoyed that and in the beginning, WELCOME TO THE '60S is kind of like a big, extravagant number." -www.contactmusic.com

Winokur won a Tony Award for playing Tracy Turnblad in Broadway's Hairspray.   She has also appeared on Broadway as Jan in Grease, andon TV in "Stacked," "Boston Public," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," among others.   Film credits include Fever Pitch, On Edge, Scary Movie, American Beauty and Never Been Kissed.
