WELCOME TO “EVER INCREASING CIRCLES”       No.1
An Action Paper devoted to “tackling climate change”
Dear Earthsaver,
FEBRUARY 2007
You know that Climate Change is now a reality. We hear about it almost daily in the news. Scientific studies continue to make ever worsening predictions about climate change chaos.
The scale of the problem of Global Warming is now enormous.
The predictions include a huge rise in summer temperatures which will threaten the very existence of the polar ice caps, and many glaciers, causing widespread flooding around the world. By the
people in
2040s a 2003
type summer (the hottest in history and in which
35,000
Europe died) will be average. Nobody can forecast exactly what will happen. The most worrying aspect is the danger of the unpredictable. There will be an increase in extreme weather.
The problems are vast- but not insurmountable. Our EarthSaver Action Paper will help you make a start if you’re not sure where to begin. More detail can be found on our website which runs in partnership with this. There are instant links to many other sites making it easy to find the information you want quickly.

(managed by Mark my son) There is a
BLOG
on it too
for your suggestions.
Our EarthSaver Action Paper
will emphasize these points:
1) Lots of people making lifestyle changes could slow down the effects of climate change.
2) Learn & quote the facts to others. Photocopy or E-mail the sheets to spread the ideas.
3) We will examine the green technologies- from light bulbs to solar and wind power.
4) Each edition of
“Ever Increasing Circles”
will focus on a particular theme.

Energy Tracker mind blowing facts
Did you know that when you boil a
full 1.5 litre kettle
it uses
155 watts
- but when you boil
115 watts
water for one cup it only uses
50 watts.
With that
saving
of
–there would be
enough power to run an energy efficient light bulb for
10 hours!
THE EVER INCREASING CIRCLES STORY-
Kettle talk
A friend admitted to me that he always
filled
the kettle to the
top
even for only
one cup
of tea. He acknowledged that it was a
bad habit.
“Did he realise,” I asked him, “that if
everyone
in the country
only filled
the kettle with the
amount of water
they needed on one day, then the
energy saved
would
power all the street lamps in Britain
for the
following evening!”
He was stunned by this
fact.
By changing to this
simple action,
he has
saved electricity,
saved
money,
saved
water, reduced CO2
emissions and …
saved time
as he got to drink his
cup of tea much
sooner!
NOW- gradually work through the important actions on the next page.
(Ever Increasing Circles. No 1 page 2.)
So
you‘ve heard the
facts.
Please
don’t turn
your back.
There is a way through.
Start to reduce your CO2. (And your bills!)
It really
isn’t that hard.
Begin
today
on the list below.
Make them your
New Year resolutions
(which by now you will have forgotten!)
to last the whole year through.(and forever!)
SIX EASY STEPS to reducing your bills and CO2
SUPERFACTS
Every year: 25% of the UK’s total CO2
emissions come
from houses,
the average home producing 6 tonnes of CO2
- that’s
more
than the
average car-
and we waste about two power stations’ worth of electricity just by leaving things on standby.
Boiling the kettle
Don’t fill the kettle to the brim. Just boil
enough
for your needs. If everyone did this –
the energy saved would power the street lamps of Britain for the following evening!
Light Bulbs
Turn
OFF
lights when leaving a room. Switch to
low energy bulbs.
They produce 80% less carbon than standard bulbs, and last up to 15 times longer. If every light bulb in the world was changed-global warming could be solved.
Electricity
Turn OFF at MAINS
when not using the
TV, Computer, DVD, Sky Digital, Microwave etc.
The energy used to power display clocks, digits, ON lights, and memory chips accounts for 8% of the UK’s domestic energy consumption. A video recorder left on uses almost as much electricity as one playing a tape.
A laptop uses a lot less energy than a computer.
Food and Cooking
Plan your meals, so you don’t buy more food than you need. If possible, buy British and
Fair Trade food – in season - from local shops and Farmers Markets.
Use a
steamer
to cook vegetables. This will reduce fuel consumption as one ring powers 3 saucepans
Try using a Slo-cooker. Turn electric ovens and rings off before the required time as they retain heat.
Keeping clean
Wash
clothes in
30 degrees or colder
- it still gets everything clean. This will save up to
40% on energy which is mainly used in
heating the water.
Tumble driers eat energy.
Put shirts and blouses on hangers then they’ll need
Dry clothes either outside or indoors.
very little or even
no ironing! Take a quick shower in preference to a bath.
Recycling is the un-glamorous but really important member of the energy equation.
An amazing amount of energy can be
saved by recycling
and re-using items. Recycling
one plastic bottle
saves enough energy to power a
60 watt light bulb for 6 hours.
To dramatically cut down on plastic bottles simply
order more milk from the milk man and
Do use your councils re-cycling facilities.
reduce the amount of bottled drinks you buy.
